June 16, 2017 | 2016 Federal Tax Return | If you need more time to file the federal tax return, you can file form 4868 before June 16th and request an additional extension until October 16th without any further explanation. |
October 16, 2017 | 2016 Federal Tax Return | Last day to file a 2016 Federal Income Tax Return for Tax Extension filers.
Last day to request a discretionary 2-month additional extension of time to file your tax return if you live outside of the U.S. However, unlike in the above cases, for this extension you will have to explain in the latter the reasons why you need the additional two months.
